Oakdale Farm​

Every project begins with understanding the architecture before introducing a single furnishing. At Oakdale Farm, that process began long before selecting antiques, textiles, or artwork. I first studied the house itself—its Federal proportions, circulation, original millwork, and the sequence of rooms that have defined daily life here for generations.

The front entrance establishes that experience immediately. Its classical doorway, balanced façade, and restrained ornament announce the architectural character of the house before one crosses the threshold. Inside, a series of carefully proportioned rooms unfolds through broad openings, graceful transitions, and an elegant central stair that quietly organizes movement throughout the home.

To better understand these relationships, I documented the principal rooms through measured drawings and architectural observations. The dining room, living room, and gathering room were studied not as isolated spaces but as a connected composition. Circulation patterns, sight lines, natural light, and architectural symmetry became the framework from which every subsequent design decision evolved.

Throughout the house, seemingly modest details reveal extraordinary craftsmanship. Fluted pilasters, classical capitals, paneled walls, generous fireplaces, and carefully proportioned openings work together to create a quiet architectural rhythm that deserves to remain the foundation of every design intervention.

Rather than competing with these qualities, my goal was to strengthen them. Furnishings, rugs, lighting, and artwork were selected to support the architecture, allowing the character of the house to remain the primary focus while creating rooms that feel comfortable, elegant, and genuinely lived in.

This project continues to serve as an ongoing architectural study. With comprehensive field measurements, floor plans, and photographic documentation now complete, future design development will explore how these principal rooms may be reimagined while preserving the enduring character that has defined Oakdale Farm for nearly two centuries.
